Artwork

"I use the swirl in many ways. I often use it to represent water because water is life. This design depicts the rhythm and dance that water has and how therapeutic and soothing it can be."

Artist

Mary Louise Tafoya, born and raised on the Kewa Pueblo (formerly known as Santo Domingo Pueblo) in northern New Mexico, is a master of mosaic jewelry. Raised in a family of distinguished jewelry makers, Mary’s artistry is rooted in a cultural heritage specific to her Pueblo. For centuries, craftspeople from Kewa Pueblo traded their jewelry which incorporated shells, turquoise and jet. Mary hand cuts each of the materials and combines them to create her whimsical interpretations of the natural world. Lorenzo Tafoya, Mary’s husband, creates the silver work in her jewelry.
